The CFT Buddy Scheme supports people who may feel unsure about attending the theatre alone by pairing them with a trained and friendly volunteer. Buddies accompany audience members to performances, helping them feel welcomed and supported during their visit.
The scheme is open to everyone, though we find it’s particularly helpful for people experiencing anxiety or reduced confidence, individuals with physical access needs or adults at risk of social isolation.
The scheme was created in response to regular audience members who wanted to continue enjoying the shows at the theatre, but due to changes in circumstances, no longer felt confident doing so on their own. Often, it wasn’t solely physical access that was the issue – it was the missing companionship.
The CFT Buddies Scheme helps people connect with cultural experiences that enrich wellbeing and quality of life.
Some people may have worries about navigating the building, managing crowds, or simply being alone in an unfamiliar space. Others may be seeking support in locating our cafes and facilities. For some, the barrier relates to getting to and from the theatre safely and confidently. These concerns can stop them from going out altogether.
A Buddy provides calm, one-to-one support so that theatre visits feel manageable, comfortable, and enjoyable. We are also pleased to offer Travel Buddy Support to scheme users, whereby one of our volunteers will collect them from home and take them to and from the theatre for the performance.
Many people say attending with a Buddy helped them relax and enjoy the experience without worry. Others tell us it gave them the confidence to return again – sometimes independently. For some, it’s been their first enjoyable outing in a long time.
“My buddy Sue was simply brilliant. She made the whole afternoon an enjoyable and relaxing experience. Thank you all so much for providing this service.”
“Everyone has been so kind and warm to me. It has meant a great deal. I really can’t thank you all enough. It has meant that I can have time away from my difficulties and connect with my creative self.”
Buddies are caring volunteers who enjoy helping others feel included. They’re patient, good listeners, and motivated by making a positive difference in someone’s day. Crucially, they all share a passion for theatre!
Support is tailored to the individual, as everyone’s needs are different. Whether that means meeting a Buddy for a coffee ahead of the performance, offering an arm whilst navigating the building, or simply being a companion to share the experience with. Every visit is shaped around what that person needs to feel comfortable.
Accessible venues help people stay socially connected and engaged with the local community. This plays a vital role in emotional wellbeing, confidence, and independence. We know that theatre has the potential to transform lives, and it’s important to us that opportunities to engage in our work are offered to as wide an audience as possible.
Vitale Care supports people to remain independent at home; the Buddy Scheme supports confidence beyond the home.
Together, we encourage independence, connection, and enjoyment of everyday life – helping people stay active, engaged, and part of their community.
