Keeping warm in a cold snap: some simple advice for the elderly

For older people concerned about how to keep warm in the cold weather, here are some simple tips that won’t break the bank.

Why is it harder for older people to keep warm?

As we age, we lose some of the muscle mass that helps us keep warm. You may feel frailer as you get older, and this can make it more difficult to keep active. Staying active helps us keep warm.

The cold can make health conditions harder to manage. It can affect our heart and circulation. When we are cold, our blood doesn’t circulate as well. This causes less heat to be released from blood vessels in the skin. Our cardiovascular systems and our immune can struggle to compensate. Being cold can increase the risk of a stroke or heart attack.

How to keep warm this winter

Wear lots of layers

Several thin layers will keep you warmer than one thick jumper. Base layers such as thermal vests or long-sleeve tops can trap heat. Wear warm socks and slippers. A blanket over your knees and feet can help you keep warm. Wrap up well and wear sturdy boots, gloves, a scarf and a hat if you go outdoors.

Keep moving

Avoid sitting still for long periods. Even a little activity can help you maintain strength and mobility. If you lack mobility, gentle movements while sitting can help. When you do sit down, put your feet up as it’s usually coldest nearest the ground.

Eat hot meals and drink hot drinks

Eat hot meals and have regular hot drinks. Porridge, a jacket potato, pasta, soups and stews won’t break the bank. Try to include at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day. This can help your immune system work well effectively during winter. Using a slow cooker, microwave, or air fryer can reduce costs, compared to an oven-cooked meal.  Vitale’s Care Professionals can cook you a homemade meal and help you with shopping.

Keeping your home warm

Ensure your home is adequately heated. Not heating your home properly can contribute to damp issues and frozen pipes if the weather’s cold. This can cause expensive damage to your home. Keep the room where you spend most of your time heated to at least 18°C if you can. Remember to turn off radiators in hallways or rooms that aren’t being used and close doors to trap heat in the right areas. Use a hot water bottle or an electric blanket to keep warm at night but don’t use an electric blanket if you can’t use the controls yourself. Block any areas in your home that are draughty, including around window frames and under doors. Ask a friend or neighbour to help if you can’t manage this yourself. Keep your curtains open in the daytime to let light and warmth in, but close them before it gets dark to avoid losing heat.  Vitale’s Care Professionals can help you keep your home tidy and make sure things like draft excluders are in place.
