Companionship Home Care - Helping you through SAD

As winter starts to settle in, many older adults begin to feel the effects of shorter days and long dark evenings. Seasonal Affective Disorder, often known as SAD, can bring a noticeable dip in mood and energy levels. But at Vitale Care, we can help. We offer companionship home care services across West Sussex and the South Coast. If you have an elderly relative or friend, read on. In this article, we’ll help you understand the signs of SAD and how to respond to them.

Recognising the Signs of SAD in Older Adults

SAD can affect people in different ways, although it often brings a general sense of low mood and lack of energy. Older adults may find they have less interest in the things they usually enjoy or may feel more tired than usual. Some might withdraw slightly, talk less, or need quiet around them. Others may struggle to get restful sleep. It can also become harder to concentrate, stay motivated, or follow a usual routine.

Small changes are often the first indicators. A loved one may seem flatter in mood, slow to start the day, or less engaged in conversation. If these signs appear to follow the seasons or begin to affect daily life, it may be helpful to speak with a GP. Support and guidance are available, and early conversations make it easier to decide what would help most.

Practical Ways to Support Well-being at Home

Many gentle habits can help lift a low mood during the winter months. Natural light is particularly important, so spending time near a window or taking a short walk on brighter days can be beneficial. For those who find it harder to get outside, simple changes such as opening curtains wide or arranging seating to face the daylight can still have a positive effect.

Light activity can also help. This might be a slow stroll with support, seated exercises, or stretching that keeps the body moving. Encouraging hobbies can brighten the day, too. Reading, puzzles, knitting, listening to music, or trying a new pastime can provide comfort and interest.

The home environment plays a part as well. Soft lighting, warm meals, familiar routines, and a tidy space can all help the days feel more settled, which is especially reassuring when the weather feels gloomy.

It helps to get out and about, even if you don’t always feel like it. At Vitale Care, we’re delighted to have helped set up and run several Community Hubs across Chichester and the South Coast. The hubs offer practical support services for older and vulnerable people and their families. But you’re also welcome to drop by for a chat and a cup of tea. It’s just one of the extra ways we try to reduce isolation for people in our community. Find out more about when and where you can find a Hub HERE.

How Companionship Home Care Supports Emotional Well-being

Good company makes us all feel better, especially during winter. Regular companionship helps ease feelings of isolation, which often become more noticeable when days are short and the weather keeps people indoors. A Care Professional can offer friendly conversation, support with gentle activities, or be present for quiet company. These moments of connection can lift confidence and help someone feel less alone.

As part of our Companionship Home Care Services, our Care Professionals get to know their clients well. They notice subtle changes, understand what brings comfort, and shape the day around familiar routines. Whether enjoying a cup of tea together, going outside on a bright day, or supporting someone through a low mood, this steady presence helps make winter feel more manageable.
